Children

Children who had never seen toothpaste went to university

On their first day out of the desert the children did not know their birthdays and had never seen a toothbrush. Seven years later three of them entered one of Lahore's leading universities, and one was elected student president of a school of nine hundred.

Family

Out of the kiln after seventeen years

A thousand bricks a day earn about seven dollars. The debt never shrinks, and the children tread clay instead of going to school. In August 2020 the first family paid off its debt and left the kiln: eight people began a new life in a home of their own.

Village

Tents became brick houses

A tent colony beside the highway on the edge of Lahore. In 2014 a small chapel and a classroom went up here, and one by one the tents turned into brick houses. Today some seventy children study in the upstairs classrooms, and in the evenings adults who never learned to read come to learn their letters.
